Growth of “No Religious Affiliation” in U.S.

No wonder the religious right feels threatened. As the chart below shows (be sure to click to see full size), religious affiliation is rapidly declining. Look at the large swaths of blue states where less than 1/3rd of the population are religious adherents. Add in the Green states (less than half are religious adherents) and you can see why the religious right is anxious to get their claims that the U.S. is a Christian nation and their religious tenets against gay rights, etc., explicitly embedded into Constitutions before they are completely outnumbered – remembering that many religious adherents are not right-wing fundamentalists so even where religious adherents are the majority, fundamentalists may still be outnumbered.

For the purpose of this study, religious adherents are defined as those with an affiliation to a congregation including children, members and attendees who are not members.
