Book banning in our schools

Not only has Arizona prohibited Mexican-American Studies curriculum in public schools, it has now dragged books by Silko, Winona LaDuke, Momaday, Sandra Cisneros out of children’s hands. Even Shakespeare’s The Tempest is banned, and administrators told teachers to stay away from any class units where “race, ethnicity and oppression are central themes.”

Other banned books include Pedagogy of the Oppressed by famed Brazilian educator Paulo Freire and Occupied America: A History of Chicanos which includes works by Leslie Silko, Buffy Sainte Marie, Winona LaDuke, Leonard Peltier and Rigoberta Menchu.
